Targeting Childhood Obesity

July 25, 2011

“In the end, as First Lady, this isn’t just a policy issue for me. This is a passion.   This is my mission. I am determined to work with folks across this country to change the way a generation of kids thinks about food, nutrition and physical activity.” – First Lady Michelle Obama

Our First Lady is speaking of her “Lets Move” initiative, dedicated to solve the problem of childhood obesity within a generation.

Vista Hill’s SmartCare Program embraces this mission, even more so, since assisting with Palomar Pomerado Health’s Project 21SD TODAY, a 5th grade obesity screening completed at target schools within the districts of Ramona and Valley Center.  We were disheartened to learn that between 26.9% – 33.9% of the children in the communities we serve were overweight or obese.

SmartCare provides Wellness events and activities in response to the needs and requests of the communities of Ramona, Pauma Valley, Campo and surrounding areas.  We’ve been pleased to respond to such requests as, “Healthy Living on a Budget” for Seniors and “The Importance of Exercise” for youth at the Boys & Girls Club in Ramona.

We have targeted this summer to bring weekly “family participation” events to local community parks, so that parents and children can learn together how to increase their activity level and learn about healthy eating as a family, while embracing their individual cultures traditions.

We hope to build on this momentum as we move into the school year – when we prepare parents of Kindergarteners for school and what to pack for lunch, as we weave body image exercises into our self-esteem workshops at local schools, as we teach relaxation skills along with the importance of daily exercise.

We’re eager to hear your ideas as well!  Please leave us your suggestions as we partner together to combat childhood obesity!
